Blending the philosophy of the English Regency with the luxury of Imperial China.
As British dandies often turned to the East in order to bring the exoticism and splendor of the Orient to his wardrobe and his lifestyle, Oriens & Grey is aimed at his modern parallel-- the man who is stylish and worldly, but bored with convention.
Heavily influenced by the culture of the Tang Dynasty, a golden age of art, literature, and trade which reopened the Silk Road to the West, Oriens & Grey is founded by Nina Cheng, a direct descendant of Cheng Yao Jing, the legendary general of the Tang Dynasty. Having lived in China, Europe, and the United States, Cheng had realized that despite widespread intrigue in the art and culture of Dynastic China, no one in modern times had attempted to create luxury items on par with those found within the palace courts of China. After meeting Cheng, master artisan Li Bosheng, who had previously refused all similar proposals to introduce his art to the Western world, proclaimed Cheng was "the bridge between East and West".
China is the world's oldest civilization with an unparalleled history of luxury, captivating the West starting from the introduction of Chinese silks by Marco Polo. The French, coining the term "Chinoiserie," became fascinated with Chinese culture after Louis XIV displayed gifts from the Far East of porcelain, silks, and embroideries at Versailles. The British, Dutch, and German aristocracy insisted on blue and white Ming porcelain for teaware and decorated their houses in Chinese style. The appeal of Chinoiserie spread to Russia, where a century later, Catherine the Great commissioned the creation of the Chinese Village. However, since the 19th century, Chinese luxury has largely remained undetected to the contemporary Western world.
The arena is filled to the brim with Western notions of 'high-end' and 'upscale.' With a collection designed and crafted to meet the ancient standards as set forth by China's greatest emperors and statesmen, we seek to fill the void by finally introducing you to the luxury of the Far East.
